The Bible emphasizes helping other people because it promotes the values of love, compassion, and service to others. While supporting a church building or congregation is not inherently wrong, the Bible encourages believers to prioritize acts of charity, kindness, and generosity toward those in need. Here are a few reasons why helping others is emphasized:
Love and Compassion: Jesus taught that the two greatest commandments are to love God and to love one's neighbor as oneself (Matthew 22:37-39). Helping others is a tangible expression of love and compassion, reflecting the character of Christ and fulfilling His teachings.
Meeting Practical Needs: The Bible repeatedly emphasizes caring for the poor, widows, orphans, and those distressed (James 1:27, Proverbs 19:17). Believers are called to provide practical assistance to those who are marginalized, suffering, or in need.
Modeling Christ's Example: Jesus set an example of selflessness and service. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ministered to those who were outcasts or marginalized. As followers of Christ, believers are called to emulate His sacrificial love and selfless actions.
Stewardship and Generosity: The Bible teaches that everything we have ultimately belongs to God, and we are called to be good stewards of His resources (1 Peter 4:10). This includes using our resources to bless and help others, rather than solely focusing on personal gain or accumulating wealth.
Eternal Perspective: The Bible encourages believers to focus on treasures in heaven rather than earthly riches (Matthew 6:19-20). While churches and congregations have practical needs, the emphasis should not be on accumulating wealth or material possessions, but on advancing the kingdom of God and serving others.
It's important to note that not all churches or congregations prioritize wealth accumulation or promote a prosperity gospel mindset. Many churches actively engage in community service, social justice initiatives, and supporting those in need. It's crucial for individuals to discern the teachings and practices of a particular congregation and ensure that they align with biblical principles of love, compassion, and selfless service.
