(30) Hormah . . . Chor-ashan . . . Athach.--Hormah, called by the Canaanites Zephath, still exists in the modern village of Zep-ata. Chor-ashan is probably the same as Ashan (Joshua 15:30): it has not been discovered in modern times. Athach is quite unknown.Verse 30. - Hormah. Anciently called Zephath. For the reason of the change of name see Judges 1:17. Chor-ashan. More correctly Cor-ashan, the same place as Ashan (Joshua 15:42), a Simeonite town (1 Chronicles 4:32) assigned to the priests (Joshua 6:59). Athach, never mentioned elsewhere, may be a false reading for Ether (Joshua 19:7). 30:21-31 What God gives us, he designs we should do good with. In distributing the spoil, David was just and kind. Those are men of Belial indeed, who delight in putting hardships upon their brethren, and care not who is starved, so that they may be fed to the full. David was generous and kind to all his friends. Those who consider the Lord as the Giver of their abundance, will dispose of it with fairness and liberality. And to them which were in Hormah,.... This was a city also in the tribe of Judah; of which see Joshua 15:30, and to them which were in Chorashan; or the lake of Ashan, which was in the same tribe, see Joshua 15:42, and to them which were in Athach; nowhere else mentioned; the Greek version has Nombe instead of it, which some take to be the same with Nob; but that was in the tribe of Benjamin. |
